About Aaron Altherr
Aaron Altherr
Aaron Altherr has been the Philadelphia Phillies most productive offensive player this season. He's leading the team in doubles, home runs, average on base percentage and slugging percentage for qualified hitters. Altherr comes in second on the team for RBIs and runs following Maikel Franco. Altherr has been in the top three of every main statistical hitting category for the team so far this season.
The Phillies acquired Altherr back in 2009 when he was playing for his high school team in Arizona, in the ninth round of the draft. He would start in the minor league from 2009 through 2012 with the Gulf Coast League Phillies, Williamsport Crosscutters and Lakewood Blueclaws. Altherr played for Germany’s National Baseball team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. In late 2013, Altherr was added to the Phillies 40 man roster and would go on to play in the Arizona Fall League. Altherr made his major league debut in June 2014 to replace outfielder Tony Gywnn, Jr. Altherr was recalled to the Phillies in August 2015. Then on September 25, Altherr hit an inside-the-park grand slam against the Washington Nationals. The record breaking grand slam was the 225th inside-the-park grand slam in Major League history, and the first since 1999. He was set to play in 2016 and a injury during spring training caused him to miss playing the first half of the season.
Earlier this season, it didn't look like Altherr would be seeing much playing time. Then Altherr’s fate changed when Howie Kendrick sustained an injury making a diving catch April 16. With Kendrick on the disabled list, Altherr has taken on this opportunity to step up to the plate and show the team and fans what he's really made of. If he keeps playing this way, this could be Altherr's breakout season.
